la voce e diede in alte grida; il popolo pianse tutta quella notte. |
2 Tutti gli Israeliti mormoravano contro Mosè
e contro Aronne e tutta la comunità
disse loro: «Oh! fossimo morti nel paese d'Egitto o fossimo morti in questo deserto! |
3 E perché
il Signore ci conduce in quel paese per cadere di spada? Le nostre mogli e i nostri bambini saranno preda. Non sarebbe meglio per noi tornare in Egitto?». |
4 Si dissero l'un l'altro: «Diamoci un capo e torniamo in Egitto». |
5 Allora Mosè
e Aronne si prostrarono a terra dinanzi a tutta la comunità
riunita degli Israeliti. |
6 Giosuè
figlio di Nun e Caleb figlio di Iefunne, che erano fra coloro che avevano esplorato il paese, si stracciarono le vesti |
7 e parlarono così
a tutta la comunità
degli Israeliti: «Il paese che abbiamo attraversato per esplorarlo è
un paese molto buono. |
8 Se il Signore ci è
favorevole, ci introdurrà
in quel paese e ce lo darà
: è
un paese dove scorre latte e miele. |
9 Soltanto, non vi ribellate al Signore e non abbiate paura del popolo del paese; è
pane per noi e la loro difesa li ha abbandonati mentre il Signore è
con noi; non ne abbiate paura». |
10 Allora tutta la comunità
parlò
di lapidarli; ma la Gloria del Signore apparve sulla tenda del convegno a tutti gli Israeliti. |
11 Il Signore disse a Mosè
: «Fino a quando mi disprezzerà
questo popolo? E fino a quando non avranno fede in me, dopo tutti i miracoli che ho fatti in mezzo a loro? |
12 Io lo colpirò
con la peste e lo distruggerò
, ma farò
di te una nazione più
grande e più
potente di esso». |
13 Mosè
disse al Signore: «Ma gli Egiziani hanno saputo che tu hai fatto uscire questo popolo con la tua potenza |
14 e lo hanno detto agli abitanti di questo paese. Essi hanno udito che tu, Signore, sei in mezzo a questo popolo, e ti mostri loro faccia a faccia, che la tua nube si ferma sopra di loro e che cammini davanti a loro di giorno in una colonna di nube e di notte in una colonna di fuoco. |
15 Ora se fai perire questo popolo come un solo uomo, le nazioni che hanno udito la tua fama, diranno: |
16 Siccome il Signore non è
stato in grado di far entrare questo popolo nel paese che aveva giurato di dargli, li ha ammazzati nel deserto. |
17 Ora si mostri grande la potenza del mio Signore, perché
tu hai detto: |
18 Il Signore è
lento all'ira e grande in bontà
, perdona la colpa e la ribellione, ma non lascia senza punizione; castiga la colpa dei padri nei figli fino alla terza e alla quarta generazione. |
19 Perdona l'iniquità
di questo popolo, secondo la grandezza della tua bontà
, così
come hai perdonato a questo popolo dall'Egitto fin qui». |
20 Il Signore disse: «Io perdono come tu hai chiesto; |
21 ma, per la mia vita, com'è
vero che tutta la terra sarà
piena della gloria del Signore, |
22 tutti quegli uomini che hanno visto la mia gloria e i prodigi compiuti da me in Egitto e nel deserto e tuttavia mi hanno messo alla prova gia dieci volte e non hanno obbedito alla mia voce, |
23 certo non vedranno il paese che ho giurato di dare ai loro padri. Nessuno di quelli che mi hanno disprezzato lo vedrà
; |
24 ma il mio servo Caleb che è
stato animato da un altro spirito e mi ha seguito fedelmente io lo introdurrò
nel paese dove è
andato; la sua stirpe lo possiederà
. |
25 Gli Amaleciti e i Cananei abitano nella valle; domani tornate indietro, incamminatevi verso il deserto, per la via del Mare Rosso». |
26 Il Signore disse ancora a Mosè
e ad Aronne: |
27 «Fino a quando sopporterò
io questa comunità
malvagia che mormora contro di me? Io ho udito le lamentele degli Israeliti contro di me. |
28 Riferisci loro: Per la mia vita, dice il Signore, io vi farò
quello che ho sentito dire da voi. |
29 I vostri cadaveri cadranno in questo deserto. Nessuno di voi, di quanti siete stati registrati dall'età
di venti anni in su e avete mormorato contro di me, |
30 potrà
entrare nel paese nel quale ho giurato di farvi abitare, se non Caleb, figlio di Iefunne, e Giosuè
figlio di Nun. |
31 I vostri bambini, dei quali avete detto che sarebbero diventati una preda di guerra, quelli ve li farò
entrare; essi conosceranno il paese che voi avete disprezzato. |
32 Ma i vostri cadaveri cadranno in questo deserto. |
33 I vostri figli saranno nò
madi nel deserto per quarant'anni e porteranno il peso delle vostre infedeltà
, finché
i vostri cadaveri siano tutti quanti nel deserto. |
34 Secondo il numero dei giorni che avete impiegato per esplorare il paese, quaranta giorni, sconterete le vostre iniquità
per quarant'anni, un anno per ogni giorno e conoscerete la mia ostilità
. |
35 Io, il Signore, ho parlato. Così
agirò
con tutta questa comunità
malvagia che si è
riunita contro di me: in questo deserto saranno annientati e qui moriranno». |
36 Gli uomini che Mosè
aveva mandati a esplorare il paese e che, tornati, avevano fatto mormorare tutta la comunità
contro di lui diffondendo il discredito sul paese, |
37 quegli uomini che avevano propagato cattive voci su quel paese, morirono colpiti da un flagello, davanti al Signore. |
38 Ma di quelli che erano andati a esplorare il paese rimasero vivi Giosuè
, figlio di Nun, e Caleb, figlio di Iefunne. |
39 Mosè
riferì
quelle parole a tutti gli Israeliti; il popolo ne fu molto turbato. |
40 La mattina si alzarono presto per salire verso la cima del monte, dicendo: «Eccoci qua; noi saliremo al luogo del quale il Signore ha detto che noi abbiamo peccato». |
41 Ma Mosè
disse: «Perché
trasgredite l'ordine del Signore? La cosa non vi riuscirà
. |
42 Poiché
il Signore non è
in mezzo a voi, non salite perché
non siate sconfitti dai vostri nemici! |
43 Perché
di fronte a voi stanno gli Amaleciti e i Cananei e voi cadrete di spada; perché
avete abbandonato il Signore, il Signore non sarà
con voi». |
44 Si ostinarono a salire verso la cima del monte, ma l'arca dell'alleanza del Signore e Mosè
non si mossero dall'accampamento. |
45 Allora gli Amaleciti e i Cananei che abitavano su quel monte scesero, li batterono e ne fecero strage fino a Corma. |

14:2 Against Moses and Aaron - As the instruments and occasions of their present calamity. That we had died in this wilderness - It was not long before they had their desire, and did die in the wilderness.
14:3 The Lord - From instruments they rise higher, and strike at God the cause and author of their journey: by which we see the prodigious growth and progress of sin when it is not resisted. A prey - To the Canaanites whose land we were made to believe we should possess.
14:4 A captain - Instead of Moses, one who will be more faithful to our interest than he. Into Egypt - Stupendous madness! Whence should they have protection against the hazards, and provision against all the wants of the wilderness? Could they expect either God's cloud to cover and guide them, or Manna from heaven to feed them? Who could conduct them over the Red - sea? Or, if they went another way, who should defend them against those nations whose borders they were to pass? What entertainment could they expect from the Egyptians, whom they had deserted and brought to so much ruin?
14:5 Fell on their faces - As humble and earnest suppliants to God, the only refuge to which Moses resorted in all such straits, and who alone was able to govern this stiff - necked people. Before all the assembly - That they might awake to apprehend their sin and danger, when they sawMoses at his prayers, whom God never failed to defend, even with the destruction of his enemies.
14:6 Rent their clothes - To testify their hearty grief for the peoples blasphemy against God and sedition against Moses, and that dreadful judgment which they easily foresaw this must bring upon the congregation.
14:8 Delight in us - If by our rebellion and ingratitude we do not provoke God to leave and forsake us.
14:9 Bread - We shall destroy them as easily as we eat our bread.Their defence - Their conduct and courage, and especially God, who was pleased to afford them his protection 'till their iniquities were full, is utterly departed from them, and hath given them up as a prey to us.With us - By his special grace and almighty power, to save us from them and all our enemies. Only rebel not against the Lord - Nothing can ruin sinners but their own rebellion. If God leaves them, 'tis because they drive him from them, and they die, because they will die.
14:10 Appeared - Now in the extremity of danger to rescue his faithful servants, and to stop the rage of the people. In the tabernacle - Upon or above the tabernacle, where the cloud usually resided, in which the glory of God appeared now in a more illustrious manner. When they reflected upon God, his glory appeared not, to silence their blasphemies: but when they threatened Caleb and Joshua, they touched the apple of his eye, and his glory appeared immediately. They who faithfully expose themselves for God, are sure of his special provision.
14:12 I will smite them - This was not an absolute determination, but a commination, like that of Nineveh's destruction, with a condition implied, except there be speedy repentance, or powerful intercession.
14:16 Not able - His power was quite spent in bringing them out of Egypt, and could not finish the work he had begun and had sworn to do.
14:17 Be great - That is appear to be great, discover its greatness: namely, the power of his grace and mercy, or the greatness of his mercy, in pardoning this and their other sins: for to this the following words manifestly restrain it, where the pardon of their sins is the only instance of this power both described in God's titles, Numeri 14:18, and prayed for by Moses Numeri 14:19, and granted by God in answer to him, Numeri 14:20. Nor is it strange that the pardon of sin, especially such great sins, is spoken of as an act of power in God, because undoubtedly it is an act of omnipotent and infinite goodness.
14:18 Visiting the iniquity - These words may seem to be improperly mentioned, as being a powerful argument to move God to destroy this wicked people, and not to pardon them. It may be answered, that Moses useth these words together with the rest, because he would not sever what God had put together. But the truer answer seems to be, that these words are to be translated otherwise, And in destroying he will not utterly destroy, though he visit the iniquity of the fathers upon the children, unto the third and fourth generation.
14:20 I have pardoned - So far as not utterly to destroy them.
14:21 With the glory of the Lord - With the report of the glorious and righteous acts of God in punishing this rebellious people.
14:22 My glory - That is, my glorious appearances in the cloud, and in the tabernacle. Ten times - That is, many times. A certain number for an uncertain.
14:24 Caleb - Joshua is not named, because he was not now among the people, but a constant attendant upon Moses, nor was he to be reckoned as one of them, any more than Moses and Aaron were, because he was to be their chief commander. He had another spirit - Was a man of another temper, faithful and courageous, not acted by that evil spirit of cowardice, unbelief, disobedience, which ruled in his brethren but by the spirit of God. Fully - Universally and constantly, through difficulties and dangers, which made his partners halt. Whereinto he went - In general, Canaan, and particularly Hebron, and the adjacent parts, Giosuè 14:9.
14:25 In the valley - Beyond the mountain, at the foot whereof they now were, Numeri 14:40. And this clause is added, either
14:28 As ye have spoken - When you wickedly wished you might die in the wilderness.
14:30 You - Your nation; for God did not swear to do so to these particular persons.
14:32 Your carcases - See with what contempt they are spoken of, now they had by their sin made themselves vile! The mighty men of valour were but carcases, now the Spirit of the Lord was departed from them!It was very probably upon this occasion, that Moses wrote the ninetieth psalm.
14:33 Forty years - So long as to make up the time of your dwelling in the wilderness forty years; one whole year and part of another were past before this sin or judgment. Your whoredoms - The punishment of your whoredoms, of your apostacy from, and perfidiousness against your Lord, who was your husband, and had married you to himself.
14:34 Each day for a year - So there should have been forty years to come, but God was pleased mercifully to accept of the time past as a part of that time. Ye shall know my breach of promise - That as you have first broken the covenant between you and me, by breaking the conditions of it, so I will make it void on my part, by denying you the blessings promised in that covenant. So you shall see, that the breach of promise wherewith you charged me, lies at your door, and was forced from me by your perfidiousness.
14:37 By the plague - Either by the pestilence, or by some other sudden and extraordinary judgment, sent from the cloud in which God dwelt, and from whence he spake to Moses, and wherein his glory at this time appeared before all the people, Numeri 14:10, who therefore were all, and these spies among the rest, before the Lord.
14:38 But Joshua and Caleb lived still - Death never misses his mark, nor takes any by oversight who are designed for life, tho' in the midst of those that are to die.
14:39 And the people mourned greatly - But it was now too late. There was now no place for repentance. Such mourning as this there is in hell; but the tears will not quench the flames.
14:40 Gat them up - Designed or prepared themselves to go up.
14:45 The Canaanites - Largely so called, but strictly the Amorites.Hormah - A place so called afterwards, Numeri 21:3, from the slaughter or destruction of the lsraelites at this time.
