Is there a link between personal or national independence and spiritual life? It can seem sometimes that there is, and even more directly. It is not accidentally if the first commandment of Decalogue begins with the words "I am the LORD, your God, who brought you forth out of the land of Egypt, from the house of bondage". And the return on the land of the fathers from the Babylonian captivity was perceived by the repatriates, as a sign, that God has forgiven them, as a nation, all the sins committed formerly by their ancestors. But, on the other hand, Paul for example, in his messages says nothing on the necessity of a legal freedom for the slaves, as an indispensable condition of their full Christian life (although he does not advise to miss the possibility to free themselves from bondage dependence, if it [ the possibility] appears). The Babylonian captivity, was for example, in the spiritual sense for the Jewish people a very busy time, when was written the Torah and was formed the synagogue. But why all the prophets, including Isaiah of Jerusalem, speak about the liberation, as about an event not so political, than spiritual? Maybe, it is not only about the liberation as such here, but about something else? Indeed: the captivity, the slavery, the loss of the national independence become in the Torah, and in the prophetic preaching the consequence of spiritual failures, connected above all with the denial, also moreover as with the other violations of the commandments given by God. And the deliverance from captivity in such a case becomes a sign that the spiritual condition of the people has become normal again, so normal that can be return to them the management of the land, that God gave once to their fathers, without being afraid that they can desecrate it. Well then the deliverance really becomes a spiritual event: It means that God restores His union with the people, the union-covenant, to which He remained faithful even when people forgot about it. |
