In recounting Jotham's reign, the narrator compares his deeds, which were pleasing in the Lord's sight, with those of his father Uzziah, but adds that Jotham did not repeat his father's claim to perform priestly rites. Even when a person has stumbled, as Uzziah stumbled, the memory of that person's good deeds is preserved; relying on them creates the continuity that makes it possible to build something enduring and valuable even in our fragile and sinful world.
The account of the events during Jotham's reign is brief. Indeed, it is difficult to give a detailed account when every event stays within the bounds of normality, when even wars with neighboring peoples unfold without unexpected complications and end in a quick and easy victory. Yet how precious it is when peace comes to a state and everyday life can proceed normally, without excessive upheaval!
