Jeremiah, Chapter 28
1 Hananiah prophesieth falsely the return of the vessels, and of Jeconiah, 5 Jeremiah, wishing it to be true, showeth that the event will declare who are the true prophets, 10 Hananiah breaketh Jeremiah's yoke, 12 Jeremiah telleth of an iron yoke, 15 and foretelleth Hananiah's deathMatthew, Chapter 14, verses 22-36
22 he walketh on the sea to his disciples, 34 and, landing at Genesseret, healeth the sick by the touch of the hem of his garment14
14:22 He constrained his disciples - Who were unwilling to leave him. Mar 6:45; Joh 6:15.
14:24 In the evening - Learned men say the Jews reckoned two evenings; the first beginning at three in the afternoon, the second, at sunset. If so, the latter is meant here.
14:25 The fourth watch - The Jews (as well as the Romans) usually divided the night into four watches, of three hours each. The first watch began at six, the second at nine, the third at twelve, the fourth at three in the morning. If it be thou - It is the same as, Since it is thou. The particle if frequently bears this meaning, both in ours and in all languages. So it means, Joh 13:14, Joh 13:17. St. Peter was in no doubt, or he would not have quitted the ship.
14:30 He was afraid - Though he had been used to the sea, and was a skilful swimmer. But so it frequently is. When grace begins to act, the natural courage and strength are withdrawn.
14:33 Thou art the Son of God - They mean, the Messiah.
14:35 Mar 6:45.

28 Hananiah's false prophecy: Jeremiah's answer, Jer 28:1-9.
Hananiah breaks Jeremiah's yoke: he foretells an iron yoke, and Hananiah's death, Jer 28:10-17.
28:1 The fourth year - Perhaps the fourth year of the sabbatical course is here intended. Of Gibeon - it is probable from the place where he lived, which was one of the cities of the priests; that he was a priest.
28:12 Then - Some time after.
28:13 But - Thou hast further incensed God against them, and provoked him to make their judgment heavier.
28:17 Died - Within two months after Jeremiah had thus prophesied; so dangerous a thing it is for ministers to teach people contrary to the revealed will of God.
