Atti degli Apostoli, Capitolo 16, versi 16-34

¹⁶Mentre andavamo alla preghiera, venne verso di noi una giovane schiava, che aveva uno spirito di divinazione e procurava molto guadagno ai suoi padroni facendo l'indovina.

¹⁷Essa seguiva Paolo e noi gridando: «Questi uomini sono servi del Dio Altissimo e vi annunziano la via della salvezza».

¹⁸Questo fece per molti giorni finché Paolo, mal sopportando la cosa, si volse e disse allo spirito: «In nome di Gesù Cristo ti ordino di partire da lei». E lo spirito partì all'istante.

¹⁹Ma vedendo i padroni che era partita anche la speranza del loro guadagno, presero Paolo e Sila e li trascinarono nella piazza principale davanti ai capi della città ;

²⁰presentandoli ai magistrati dissero: «Questi uomini gettano il disordine nella nostra città ; sono Giudei

²¹e predicano usanze che a noi Romani non è lecito accogliere né praticare».

²²La folla allora insorse contro di loro, mentre i magistrati, fatti strappare loro i vestiti, ordinarono di bastonarli

²³e dopo averli caricati di colpi, li gettarono in prigione e ordinarono al carceriere di far buona guardia.

²⁴Egli, ricevuto quest'ordine, li gettò nella cella più interna della prigione e strinse i loro piedi nei ceppi.

²⁵Verso mezzanotte Paolo e Sila, in preghiera, cantavano inni a Dio, mentre i carcerati stavano ad ascoltarli.

²⁶D'improvviso venne un terremoto così forte che furono scosse le fondamenta della prigione; subito tutte le porte si aprirono e si sciolsero le catene di tutti.

²⁷Il carceriere si svegliò e vedendo aperte le porte della prigione, tirò fuori la spada per uccidersi, pensando che i prigionieri fossero fuggiti.

²⁸Ma Paolo gli gridò forte: «Non farti del male, siamo tutti qui».

²⁹Quegli allora chiese un lume, si precipitò dentro e tremando si gettò ai piedi di Paolo e Sila;

³⁰poi li condusse fuori e disse: «Signori, cosa devo fare per esser salvato?».

³¹Risposero: «Credi nel Signore Gesù e sarai salvato tu e la tua famiglia».

³²E annunziarono la parola del Signore a lui e a tutti quelli della sua casa.

³³Egli li prese allora in disparte a quella medesima ora della notte, ne lavò le piaghe e subito si fece battezzare con tutti i suoi;

³⁴poi li fece salire in casa, apparecchiò la tavola e fu pieno di gioia insieme a tutti i suoi per avere creduto in Dio.

16:17 These men are - A great truth: but St. Paul did not need, nor would accept, of such testimony.

16:19 The magistrates - The supreme magistrates of the city. In the next verse they are called by a title which often signifies pretors. These officers exercised both the military and civil authority.

16:20 Being Jews - A nation peculiarly despised by the Romans.

16:21 And teach customs which it is not lawful for us to receive - The world has received all the rules and doctrines of all thephilosophers that ever were. But this is a property of Gospel truth: it has something in it peculiarly intolerable to the world.

16:23 They laid many stripes upon them - Either they did not immediately say they were Romans, or in the tumult it was not regarded. Charging the jailer - Perhaps rather to quiet the people than because they thought them criminal.

16:24 Secured their feet in the stocks - These were probably those large pieces of wood, in use among the Romans, which not only loaded the legs of the prisoner, but also kept them extended in a very painful manner.

16:25 Paul and Silas sung a hymn to God - Notwithstanding weariness, hunger stripes, and blood. And the prisoners heard - A song to which they were not accustomed.

16:28 But Paul cried - As they were all then in the dark, it is not easy to say, how Paul knew of the jailer's purpose; unless it were by some immediate notice from God, which is by no means incredible. With a loud voice - Through earnestness, and because he was at some distance. Do thyself no harm - Although the Christian faith opens the prospect into another life, yet it absolutely forbids and effectually prevents a man's discharging himself from this.

16:30 Sirs - He did not style them so the day before. What must I do to be saved? - From the guilt I feel and the vengeance I fear?Undoubtedly God then set his sins in array before him, and convinced him in the clearest and strongest manner that the wrath of God abode upon him.

16:31 Thou shalt be saved and thy household - If ye believe.They did so, and were saved.

16:33 He washed their stripes - It should not be forgot, that the apostles had not the power of working miraculous cures when they pleased, either on themselves, or their dearest friends. Nor was it expedient they should, since it would have frustrated many wise designs of God, which were answered by their sufferings.

16:34 He set a table before them and rejoiced - Faith makes a man joyful, prudent, liberal.

¹Passando vide un uomo cieco dalla nascita

²e i suoi discepoli lo interrogarono: «Rabbì , chi ha peccato, lui o i suoi genitori, perché egli nascesse cieco?».

³Rispose Gesù : «Né lui ha peccato né i suoi genitori, ma è così perché si manifestassero in lui le opere di Dio.

⁴Dobbiamo compiere le opere di colui che mi ha mandato finché è giorno; poi viene la notte, quando nessuno può più operare.

⁵Finché sono nel mondo, sono la luce del mondo».

⁶Detto questo sputò per terra, fece del fango con la saliva, spalmò il fango sugli occhi del cieco

⁷e gli disse: «Và a lavarti nella piscina di Sì loe (che significa Inviato)». Quegli andò , si lavò e tornò che ci vedeva.

⁸Allora i vicini e quelli che lo avevano visto prima, poiché era un mendicante, dicevano: «Non è egli quello che stava seduto a chiedere l'elemosina?».

⁹Alcuni dicevano: «E' lui»; altri dicevano: «No, ma gli assomiglia». Ed egli diceva: «Sono io!».

¹⁰Allora gli chiesero: «Come dunque ti furono aperti gli occhi?».

¹¹Egli rispose: «Quell'uomo che si chiama Gesù ha fatto del fango, mi ha spalmato gli occhi e mi ha detto: Và a Sì loe e lavati! Io sono andato e, dopo essermi lavato, ho acquistato la vista».

¹²Gli dissero: «Dov'è questo tale?». Rispose: «Non lo so».

¹³Intanto condussero dai farisei quello che era stato cieco:

¹⁴era infatti sabato il giorno in cui Gesù aveva fatto del fango e gli aveva aperto gli occhi.

¹⁵Anche i farisei dunque gli chiesero di nuovo come avesse acquistato la vista. Ed egli disse loro: «Mi ha posto del fango sopra gli occhi, mi sono lavato e ci vedo».

¹⁶Allora alcuni dei farisei dicevano: «Quest'uomo non viene da Dio, perché non osserva il sabato». Altri dicevano: «Come può un peccatore compiere tali prodigi?». E c'era dissenso tra di loro.

¹⁷Allora dissero di nuovo al cieco: «Tu che dici di lui, dal momento che ti ha aperto gli occhi?». Egli rispose: «E' un profeta!».

¹⁸Ma i Giudei non vollero credere di lui che era stato cieco e aveva acquistato la vista, finché non chiamarono i genitori di colui che aveva ricuperato la vista.

¹⁹E li interrogarono: «E' questo il vostro figlio, che voi dite esser nato cieco? Come mai ora ci vede?».

²⁰I genitori risposero: «Sappiamo che questo è il nostro figlio e che è nato cieco;

²¹come poi ora ci veda, non lo sappiamo, né sappiamo chi gli ha aperto gli occhi; chiedetelo a lui, ha l'età , parlerà lui di se stesso».

²²Questo dissero i suoi genitori, perché avevano paura dei Giudei; infatti i Giudei avevano gia stabilito che, se uno lo avesse riconosciuto come il Cristo, venisse espulso dalla sinagoga.

²³Per questo i suoi genitori dissero: «Ha l'età , chiedetelo a lui!».

²⁴Allora chiamarono di nuovo l'uomo che era stato cieco e gli dissero: «Dà gloria a Dio! Noi sappiamo che quest'uomo è un peccatore».

²⁵Quegli rispose: «Se sia un peccatore, non lo so; una cosa so: prima ero cieco e ora ci vedo».

²⁶Allora gli dissero di nuovo: «Che cosa ti ha fatto? Come ti ha aperto gli occhi?».

²⁷Rispose loro: «Ve l'ho gia detto e non mi avete ascoltato; perché volete udirlo di nuovo? Volete forse diventare anche voi suoi discepoli?».

²⁸Allora lo insultarono e gli dissero: «Tu sei suo discepolo, noi siamo discepoli di Mosè !

²⁹Noi sappiamo infatti che a Mosè ha parlato Dio; ma costui non sappiamo di dove sia».

³⁰Rispose loro quell'uomo: «Proprio questo è strano, che voi non sapete di dove sia, eppure mi ha aperto gli occhi.

³¹Ora, noi sappiamo che Dio non ascolta i peccatori, ma se uno è timorato di Dio e fa la sua volontà , egli lo ascolta.

³²Da che mondo è mondo, non s'è mai sentito dire che uno abbia aperto gli occhi a un cieco nato.

³³Se costui non fosse da Dio, non avrebbe potuto far nulla».

³⁴Gli replicarono: «Sei nato tutto nei peccati e vuoi insegnare a noi?». E lo cacciarono fuori.

³⁵Gesù seppe che l'avevano cacciato fuori, e incontratolo gli disse: «Tu credi nel Figlio dell'uomo?».

³⁶Egli rispose: «E chi è , Signore, perché io creda in lui?».

³⁷Gli disse Gesù : «Tu l'hai visto: colui che parla con te è proprio lui».

³⁸Ed egli disse: «Io credo, Signore!». E gli si prostrò innanzi.

9:2 Who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind? - That is, was it for his own sins, or the sins of his parents? They suppose (as many of the Jews did, though without any ground from Scripture) that he might have sinned in a pre - existent state, before he came into the world.

9:3 Jesus answered, Neither hath this man sinned, nor his parents - It was not the manner of our Lord to answer any questions thatwere of no use, but to gratify an idle curiosity. Therefore he determines nothing concerning this. The scope of his answer is, It was neither for any sins of his own, nor yet of his parents; but that the power of God might be displayed.

9:4 The night is coming - Christ is the light. When the light is withdrawn night comes, when no man can work - No man can do any thing toward working out his salvation after this life is ended.Yet Christ can work always. But he was not to work upon earth, only during the day, or season which was appointed for him.

9:5 I am the light of the world - I teach men inwardly by my Spirit, and outwardly by my preaching, what is the will of God; and I show them, by my example, how they must do it.

9:6 He anointed the eyes of the blind man with the clay - This might almost have blinded a man that had sight. But what could it do toward curing the blind? It reminds us that God is no farther from the event, when he works either with, or without means, and that all the creatures are only that which his almighty operation makes them.

9:7 Go, wash at the pool of Siloam - Perhaps our Lord intended to make the miracle more taken notice of. For a crowd of people would naturally gather round him to observe the event of so strange a prescription, and it is exceeding probable, the guide who must have led him in traversing a great part of the city, would mention the errand he was going upon, and so call all those who saw him to a greater attention. From the fountain of Siloam, which was without the walls ofJerusalem, a little stream flowed into the city, and was received in a kind of basin, near the temple, and called the pool of Siloam.Which is, by interpretation, Sent - And so was a type of the Messiah, who was sent of God. He went and washed, and came seeing - He believed, and obeyed, and found a blessing. Had he been wise in his own eyes, and reasoned, like Naaman, on the impropriety of the means, he had justly been left in darkness. Lord, may our proud hearts be subdued to the methods of thy recovering grace!May we leave thee to choose how thou wilt bestow favours, which it is our highest interest to receive on any terms.

9:11 A man called Jesus - He seems to have been before totally ignorant of him.

9:14 Anointing the eyes - With any kind of medicine on the Sabbath, was particularly forbidden by the tradition of the elders.

9:16 This man is not of God - Not sent of God. How can a man that is a sinner - That is, one living in wilful sin, do such miracles?

9:17 What sayest thou of him, for that he hath opened thine eyes? - What inference dost thou draw herefrom?

9:22 He should be put out of the synagogue - That is be excommunicated.

9:27 Are ye also - As well as I, at length convinced and willing to be his disciples?

9:29 We know not whence he is - By what power and authority he does these things.

9:30 The man answered - Utterly illiterate as he was. And with what strength and clearness of reason! So had God opened the eyes of his understanding, as well as his bodily eyes. Why, herein is a marvellous thing, that ye - The teachers and guides of the people, should not know, that a man who has wrought a miracle, the like of which was never heard of before, must be from heaven, sent by God.

9:31 We - Even we of the populace, know that God heareth not sinners - Not impenitent sinners, so as to answer their prayers in thismanner. The honest courage of this man in adhering to the truth, though he knew the consequence, Giovanni 9:22, gives him claim to the title of a confessor.

9:33 He could do nothing - Of this kind; nothing miraculous.

9:34 Born in sin - And therefore, they supposed, born blind.They cast him out - Of the synagogue; excommunicated him.

9:35 Having found him - For he had sought him.

9:36 Who is he, that I may believe? - This implies some degree of faith already. He was ready to receive whatever Jesus said.

9:37 Lord, I believe - What an excellent spirit was this man of!Of so deep and strong an understanding; (as he had just shown to the confusion of the Pharisees,) and yet of so teachable a temper!
