Today's reading seems absurd. If Paul's words are translated into more accessible language, the result is approximately the following: we have the law of universal gravitation; if we fall, we get hurt; however, now a new law has been introduced into creation, one that completely cancels the action of the previous one. Paul then describes how this happened and why God, in the middle of human history, introduces a new law for how the world functions. The success of this operation depends on how ready we are to accept such changes and use the new law. The sacrifice of the cross was offered so that "the righteous requirement of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not according to the flesh but according to the Spirit."
