²⁰wie ich sehnlich warte und hoffe, daß ich in keinerlei Stück zu Schanden werde, sondern daß mit aller Freudigkeit, gleichwie sonst allezeit also auch jetzt, Christus hoch gepriesen werde an meinem Leibe, es sei durch Leben oder durch Tod.

²¹Denn Christus ist mein Leben, und Sterben ist mein Gewinn.

²²Sintemal aber im Fleisch leben dient, mehr Frucht zu schaffen, so weiß ich nicht, welches ich erwählen soll.

²³Denn es liegt mir beides hart an: ich habe Lust, abzuscheiden und bei Christo zu sein, was auch viel besser wäre;

²⁴aber es ist nötiger, im Fleisch bleiben um euretwillen.

²⁵Und in guter Zuversicht weiß ich, daß ich bleiben und bei euch allen sein werde, euch zur Förderung und Freude des Glaubens,

²⁶auf daß ihr euch sehr rühmen möget in Christo Jesu an mir, wenn ich wieder zu euch komme.

²⁷Wandelt nur würdig dem Evangelium Christi, auf daß, ob ich komme und sehe euch oder abwesend von euch höre, ihr steht in einem Geist und einer Seele und samt uns kämpfet für den Glauben des Evangeliums

1:20 As always - Since my call to the apostleship. In my body - however it may he disposed of. How that might be, he did not yet know. For the apostles did not know all things; particularly in things pertaining to themselves, they had room to exercise faith and patience.

1:21 To me to live is Christ - To know, to love, to follow Christ, is my life, my glory, my joy.

1:22 Here he begins to treat of the former clause of the preceding verse. Of the latter he treats, Php 2:17.But if I am to live is the flesh, this is the fruit of my labour - This is the fruit of my living longer, that I can labour more. Glorious labour! desirable fruit! in this view, long life is indeed a blessing. And what I should choose I know not - That is, if it were left to my choice.

1:23 To depart - Out of bonds, flesh, the world. And to be with Christ - In a nearer and fuller union. It is better to depart; it is far better to be with Christ.

1:25 I know - By a prophetic notice given him while he was writing this. That I shall continue some time longer with you - And doubtless he did see them after this confinement.

1:27 Only - Be careful for this, and nothing else. Stand fast in one spirit - With the most perfect unanimity. Striving together - With united strength and endeavours. For the faith of the gospel - For all the blessings revealed and promised therein.

⁷Es kam aber vor Herodes, den Vierfürsten, alles, was durch ihn geschah; und er ward betreten, dieweil von etlichen gesagt ward; Johannes ist von den Toten auferstanden;

⁸von etlichen aber: Elia ist erschienen; von etlichen aber: Es ist der alten Propheten einer auferstanden.

⁹Und Herodes sprach: Johannes, den habe ich enthauptet; wer ist aber dieser, von dem ich solches höre? und begehrte ihn zu sehen.

¹⁰Und die Apostel kamen wieder und erzählten ihm, wie große Dinge sie getan hatten. Und er nahm sie zu sich und entwich besonders in eine Wüste bei der Stadt, die da heißt Bethsaida.

¹¹Da das Volk des inneward, zog es ihm nach. Und er ließ sie zu sich und sagte ihnen vom Reich Gottes und machte gesund, die es bedurften. Aber der Tag fing an, sich zu neigen.
