At the Lord’s command, cities of refuge are set apart for those threatened with vengeance. One of those astonishing commandments that laid the foundations for merciful relationships in society is being fulfilled. Blood is still being shed throughout the world, and relationships between people everywhere are governed by revenge, yet in the Promised Land a place has already appeared where one can hide from hasty retribution.
Many centuries ago, specially designated cities became protected places of refuge from violence, but we can expand the territory set apart for them even today. By acquiring a spirit of peace in our heart, we begin to create such a protected zone around ourselves.
