The mention of the place where construction of the temple began gives us an opportunity to recall what once happened in that very place, allowing us to see the connection and continuity among the events mentioned in the Bible. Thus, the temple is built on the very mountain where Abraham was to offer his son Isaac as a sacrifice. Other sacrifices will now be offered here; there will be no need for human sacrifices. But a day will come when, not far from here, the Son of God, in unity with His Father’s will, will freely offer Himself as a sacrifice.
It is also noted here that the temple is being built on the threshing floor of Ornan the Jebusite, and this keeps us from forgetting the times when pagans lived at the place where sacred rites would be performed. This reminds us once again that the chosen people did not live in a vacuum, and that the Lord remembers the other nations as well and cares for their salvation.
And when we read the detailed description of how the temple was arranged, we recall the equally thorough account of the construction of the Tabernacle of the Covenant in the days of Moses. Here the continuity is plain to see.
