King James Version (en)

Galatians, Chapter 5,  verses 1-12

1 He moveth them to stand in their liberty, 3 and not to observe circumcision
Stand fast therefore in the liberty wherewith Christ hath made us free, and be not entangled again with the yoke of bondage.
Behold, I Paul say unto you, that if ye be circumcised, Christ shall profit you nothing.
For I testify again to every man that is circumcised, that he is a debtor to do the whole law.
Christ is become of no effect unto you, whosoever of you are justified by the law; ye are fallen from grace.
For we through the Spirit wait for the hope of righteousness by faith.
For in Jesus Christ neither circumcision availeth anything, nor uncircumcision; but faith which worketh by love.
Ye did run well; who did hinder you that ye should not obey the truth?
This persuasion cometh not of him that calleth you.
A little leaven leaveneth the whole lump.
10 I have confidence in you through the Lord, that ye will be none otherwise minded: but he that troubleth you shall bear his judgment, whosoever he be.
11 And I, brethren, if I yet preach circumcision, why do I yet suffer persecution? then is the offence of the cross ceased.
12 I would they were even cut off which trouble you.

NOTES

In his letters Paul often compares Christian life to a race, and Christians to runners in a stadium competing with one another. Here too the apostle compares the recipients of his letter to runners who began their race well, but then something stopped them so that they no longer hear the voice of truth...

Usually we think that freedom is something that can be given to a person. One can allow him to be free from one or another requirement of the law, from obligations to behave or think in a certain way...

In Gospel times people looked at the Torah (the Law) in different ways. For most believing Jews the Torah was a kind of moral and legal code that was to be accepted and fulfilled unconditionally. At the same time it was taken for granted that this code was fulfillable...
