1 An exhortation to constant faith, patience, and godliness12
12:5 And yet ye seem already to have forgotten the exhortation - Wherein God speaketh to you with the utmost tenderness.Despise not thou the chastening of the Lord - Do not slight or make little of it; do not impute any affliction to chance or second causes but see and revere the hand of God in it. Neither faint when thou art rebuked of him - But endure it patiently and fruitfully. Heb 3:11, etc
12:6 For - All springs from love; therefore neither despise nor faint.
12:7 Whom his father chasteneth not - When he offends.
Luke, Chapter 13, verses 22-30
18 showeth the powerful working of the word in the hearts of his chosen by the parable of the mustard seed, and of leaven, 24 exhorteth to enter in at the strait gate13
13:24 Strive to enter in - Agonize. Strive as in an agony. So the word signifies Otherwise none shall enter in. Barely seeking will not avail. Mat 7:13.
13:25 And even agonizing will not avail, after the door is shut.Agonize, therefore, now by faith, prayer, holiness, patience.And ye begin to stand without - Till then they had not thought of it!O how new will that sense of their misery be? How late?How lasting? I know not whence ye are - I know not, that is, I approve not of your ways.

13:29 They shall sit down in the kingdom of God - Both the kingdom of grace and of glory.
13:30 But there are last - Many of the Gentiles who were latest called, shall be most highly rewarded; and many of the Jews who were first called, shall have no reward at all. Mat 19:30.

66:18 Come - It shall come to pass that I will cast them off, and then l will gather all nations, etc My glory - My oracles, my ordinances, which hitherto have been locked up in the church of the Jews, and been their glory, shall be published to the Gentiles.
66:19 A sign - By this may be understood Christ, Luk 2:34, or the ministry of the word attended with miracles, these were set up among the Jews first, then among the Gentiles. Afar off - To all the quarters of the world. They shall - This was eminently made good after the destruction of Jerusalem, when the believers among the Jews, as well as the apostles went about publishing the gospel to all people, which was declaring the Lord's glory.
66:20 Your brethren - Those who are the children of Abraham, not considered as the father of the Jewish nation only, but considered as the father of many nations, and as the father of the faithful, and so are your brethren, shall be brought out of all nations for an offering to the Lord. Holy mountain - And they shall be brought into the church, which began at Jerusalem. As - And they shall come with as much joy and gladness, with as much sincerity and holiness, as the Godly Jews do when they bring their offerings in clean vessels.
66:21 For priests - God will find among the converted Gentiles those who though they are not of the tribe of Levi, yet shall do the true work of priests and Levites.
