What a pity that the Book of the Wisdom of Solomon ended up among the deuterocanonical books. How many spiritually precise statements there are in it! For the authors of the Bible it is obvious that human wisdom is by no means the limit of spirituality. The true fullness of spiritual life is found in the fellowship of the human spirit and the Spirit of God, His Wisdom. And today we read about what makes such fellowship impossible. First, it is our slyness, when we seem to listen to the Spirit of wisdom but in fact seek our own, our own advantage. Pretense, dishonesty in partnership: this is our slyness. And the Holy Spirit, recognizing this, withdraws. Second, it is when we put our own wisdom, our reasonings, which the Bible calls foolish, in first place. Discovering our self-exaltation, our pride, the Spirit avoids meeting us altogether. The third obstacle is our falsehood. The Holy Spirit reveals the truth to us, and we know it, but in our actions we choose untruth, unrighteousness. Then Wisdom "blushes" for us and falls silent. So pride does not let Wisdom in, falsehood makes her silent, and dishonesty drives her away. |
