To "gain a clearer understanding," as you yourself realize, is only truly possible in practice... To a certain extent, the testimonies of people who have experienced clinical death can serve as an argument. They are all more or less uniform and allow us to think that the life of the person does not cease with the death of the body. However, it is quite obvious that proofs in this realm inherently cannot be obtained. From a Christian perspective, this would violate human freedom, first and foremost—the freedom to believe or not to believe. And God never permits anything that would violate this freedom of ours. Strictly speaking, one might also adduce the "argument of the majority": the absolute majority of people who have lived and currently live on Earth have never questioned the immortality of the soul (this applies equally to the most uneducated and the most educated among us). The notion that the personality disintegrates upon the death of the organism appeared very late and was fundamentally biased, directed against Christian morality. For Christians, however, the immortality of the soul is something so self-evident that it has never been among the defended truths of the faith. Much more important for us is that God, upon the foundation of the immortality of the soul, also grants humanity the immortality of the body in the resurrection of the dead.
