Tell me, does the Orthodox Church have an unequivocal interpretation of the reason for the betrayal of Jesus by His disciple Judas? As I understand it, thirty pieces of silver could not have been the sole cause.

There is no single, universally accepted interpretation within the Orthodox Church regarding the reason for Judas's betrayal. Perhaps there cannot be one at all. Nevertheless, there are a few views that are widespread and accepted by the majority. Most commonly, it is thought that Judas expected Christ to reign and lead the struggle for Israel's earthly greatness. The discrepancy between the true Jesus and the aspirations of Judas (and other zealots) led Judas to view Him not as the Messiah, but as an impostor. It is frequently suggested that the cause was Judas's envy of the Teacher Himself and the other disciples. Greed and the lust for power—for all their baseness—often drive people to commit such deeds. In our day, when lives are taken for a bottle of vodka, we should not be surprised by a betrayal for thirty pieces of silver. It is also often surmised that Judas intended to force a direct confrontation between Christ and the Sanhedrin, a conflict he believed Jesus was avoiding. Such is the spectrum of the most prevalent perspectives.
