Why, when Cain and Abel brought an offering to God, did God look with favor on Abel's offering and not on Cain's, since they both tried to please God?

It is a generally accepted view that God, who sees into the depths of the human heart, saw the true motives of both Cain and Abel. For us, however, they were revealed only post factum in the actions of Cain. Cain kills his brother in order to deprive God of choice and force Him to accept Cain's offering and bless him. Such an inclination toward violence against God reveals Cain's sinful, pagan attitude toward the Almighty. Cain strives to make God submit to him. It is likely that this very thing made Cain's offering unacceptable. Any communion of man with God can, therefore, be built upon an unconditional respect for the freedom of God.

However, it should be noted that Holy Scripture does not address the question of the reasons for God's choice. God is free; and freedom is primarily characterized by the fact that the reasons for actions lie within the person, rather than in external circumstances. This is true in relation to man; perhaps it is also true in relation to God.
