Dear friends!
Reading the Bible can raise many questions, and it is not always easy to find answers on your own. We publish answers to frequently asked questions, so the question you want to ask may already have been answered here.
What does it mean to keep Christ's word? Is it referring to fulfilling the commandments given by Him in the Sermon on the Mount? Or does He mean that we simply need to accept on faith everything that He says here, in this chapter of the Gospel of John?
"To keep Christ's word," of course, means to fulfill the single commandment that He gives us: to love one another as He has loved us. He Himself agrees with the disciples that this is impossible for a human being; therefore, one can only fulfill this commandment if they love Jesus Himself and strive to love their neighbor for the sake of Jesus. In doing so, the Lord brings you into His Church, and here the Holy Spirit—the third Person of the Holy Trinity—creates a new life within you, and you receive the ability to fulfill this unfulfillable commandment after all. As for the Sermon on the Mount, it is enough to look at the command to love our enemies and do good to those who hate us, and the feasibility of fulfilling this becomes entirely clear...
To believe in these words of Christ means not merely to "accept them on faith" or "without proof": He "proved" them through His death and resurrection. To believe means more than just understanding His words and agreeing with them. Faith is, first and foremost, an act, an action of human will, and only then everything else. In the Bible, faith is always the striving of the one who believes toward perfect unity with the One in whom they believe, including in everyday life. A believer is not one who merely agrees with dogmatic assertions or observes "religious prescriptions." A believer is someone for whom God personally is the greatest treasure in life.
