What does the commandment "Do not take the name of God in vain (needlessly)" mean?

This commandment is connected to the fact that in the name of God, a certain mystery of God's being and presence in the world is revealed to humanity. This mystery demands reverence; familiarity toward God is generally a deadly danger for people. Therefore, the commandment requires us to use the name of God only for the purpose for which it was given to us: to call upon Him in prayer.
