In Romans 16:12, Paul greets women, and sends greetings to Persis. Was Persis his girlfriend, meaning they were in love — or simply a sister in Christ?

The word "beloved" was a common form of mutual address among early Christians, so the apostle Paul's use of it is a standard greeting to a sister in Christ. In the Greek language, in which the epistle was written, there are no fewer than four different words to denote love in its various aspects. In this particular case, the term used designates specifically brotherly love. English, like most modern languages, unfortunately cannot convey this distinction.
