What do you think is meant when Jesus breathes on the disciples and says: “Receive the Holy Spirit” (John 20:22)?

In the words “Receive the Holy Spirit,” that is exactly what is “meant.” The Lord imparts to His disciples the gift of the Holy Spirit, which is necessary for the life of every Christian. The full realization of this gift takes place on the day of Pentecost, as described in the second chapter of the Acts of the Apostles. To some extent, this gift of Christ can be compared to the account in the second chapter of the book of Genesis about how God breathed the “breath of life” into the face of Adam.

The possibility of a personal and interpersonal encounter with the Holy Spirit is given to humanity through the Incarnation, Crucifixion, and Resurrection of Christ. Therefore, this moment is necessary, when the Lord entrusts the hearts of the disciples to the Holy Spirit, who will speak in their hearts and, as Christ Himself expressed it, will “teach them all things.”

The practice of the Christian life shows that in most cases, as it was for the apostles, some time passes between the granting of the Holy Spirit and the moment when His action begins to manifest itself in the life of a Christian. Therefore, the moment you are asking about can be considered the beginning of Pentecost.
