NOTES for Rom 8:1-2

A very "dense" phrase in its content! Let us try to understand it, starting from the end. The word "law" is used here not as a reference to the Mosaic commandments, but in the same sense as when we speak of "the laws of physics," meaning a certain causal connection of events or concepts. Then: in my nature, my flesh, there is an irresistible inclination toward sin, slavery to sin, which naturally leads me to death. Christ has freed me from this slavery, giving in exchange a different regularity: where the flesh kills, the spirit gives life. My task is to strive to act not according to the flesh, nature, but according to the spirit, the Spirit! Then neither conscience nor God condemns me. And all this not sometime in another mode of being, but already here and now!
