NOTES for Wis 18:14-16; Luk 18:1-8

When a person needs something, he persistently begs for whatever he lacks to be happy. And the Lord would seem to encourage us to call upon Him persistently for help. How often, in doing so, we imagine that God is a great taker of bribes and acts according to the principle: we give to Him, and He gives to us. Yet while He gives us what is beneficial, He will never give us what is harmful. For He is unyielding, whole, and incorruptible. These qualities of His are described in the Book of Wisdom: “Your almighty word came as a stern warrior. It carried a sharp sword.” In this sense, being with Him is like walking on a razor’s edge that cuts away from us everything that is dangerous to us.
