NOTES for Joh 8:31-42

How often unbelievers say that Christianity is nothing but problems. Even we believers sometimes feel resentful: wherever we turn, everything seems forbidden... The problem is that in the seemingly comfortable system of this world, one very quickly discovers that although apparently everything is permitted, nothing is really within reach. Jesus says simply: "Everyone who commits sin is a slave to sin." It may seem that we can allow ourselves anything, but enslaved by sin, we find ourselves almost powerless to do anything. Our life moves by inertia... Jesus promises to free us from this inertia. What He gives is genuine freedom: the freedom to be ourselves, to make our choices not automatically but truly. He paid for this freedom of ours with His Blood. It is worth asking ourselves: do we value His sacrifice, or do we fail to notice it?
