NOTES for Luk 6:46-49
In today’s parable, the Lord Jesus says that merely listening to Him and calling upon Him is not enough. Only the fulfillment of His words can provide a firm foundation for human life. The Lord says that “it is impossible that stumbling blocks should not come”; the flood in His parable is a collective image of situations in which you may fall and commit sin. Fulfilling Christ’s words proves to be the rock upon which you can stand firm. If you do not have this rock, you have no chance of standing. This matters because failure to fulfill God’s word is itself a sin. Consequently, the less you strive to fulfill it, the less hope you have of escaping from a sinful state. Conversely, even a small effort to fulfill Christ’s words gives you a foothold from which you can resist sin with ever greater strength.
