NOTES for Gen 24:1-31

Living in the land promised by God, Abraham feels himself to be in hostile surroundings. He does not want to mix with people who honor false gods, with those who worship what is unworthy of worship. And when the time comes for Isaac to marry, Abraham sends a servant to find him a wife among his own relatives, whom he left long ago. After all, there is something familiar there; at least in some respect you can be confident when you know how the young woman who is to become the wife of your only son was raised. But this human desire is still not the main thing. The most important thing is the promise, the blessing of God. And if it is impossible to fulfill one's human desire, then so be it; the main thing is to remain faithful to the calling.
