NOTES for Joh 4:43-54
The healing of the royal official's son was the first in a series of healings performed by Christ, and without taking this into account we cannot appreciate the faith of the boy's father, which bordered on prophetic insight. The official from Capernaum dared to ask Jesus for healing at a time when no one yet knew whether He was capable of such a thing.
The words addressed to the official sound stern and accusatory, for he has to listen to a reproach for wanting to see a spectacular phenomenon. One might say that the official received an unfair rebuke if we did not know that Jesus, who saw what was in each person's heart, never accused anyone unjustly. He comes to help wherever there is a real need, and He immediately helped the official as well. Yet Christ warns him, everyone around him, and therefore us too, that the pursuit of miracles and signs is unacceptable.
Acknowledging the reality of the spiritual world, partly revealed through miracles, can become an important step on the path to God. But the pursuit of miracles must not obscure the Giver of miracles.
