NOTES for Gal 2:11-21

The situation is familiar. You yourself think that certain rules have outlived their usefulness, yet in a particular environment you follow them so as not to create unnecessary problems. But when the question arises of forcing everyone else to follow these same obsolete rules, what will you do? Will you agree with the majority in this narrow circle, or defend the freedom to live differently, including your own freedom, which you secretly exercise? So it is in this text. Paul demands that the apostles, who no longer observe the precepts of the law themselves because they are led by the Holy Spirit, stop demanding observance of that same law from Gentiles who have directly accepted Christ. Paul explains in great detail the threat that such a policy of double standards poses to the Church and to a person. Moreover, he explains how harmful it is to the Church of Christ. It must be said that Paul’s speech is harsh, and it is particularly important to remember that he says all this to apostles chosen by Christ Himself. Thus, those who are chosen are not immune from error; but by accepting Christ, a person receives the wonderful gift of hearing, because he always remembers that the Spirit blows where He wills.
