NOTES for Heb 4:1-11
Hardness of heart is a terrible affliction that often strikes a person who encounters God. This important moment is very often used to present the terrible account that every person—believer, unbeliever, or atheist—carries within, ready to recite the whole list at the appropriate moment. This blacklist is always before us, and when coming face to face with God, everyone must make a very difficult choice: to justify God or to justify oneself. If God is good, then I am to blame—but surely I cannot be guilty! To remain spotless in one's own eyes, it is easier to declare that God is to blame for everything happening in the world. For this, a person is ready to renounce everything, even the life God offers.
