The message of the bodily resurrection of the dead was new to recent pagans who had come to believe in Christ, and they had difficulty receiving it. They were troubled by various "technical" questions: when? how? in what body? The apostle Paul says that such stumbling blocks testify to distrust of the almighty and all-good God, and every distrust of God is sin. Let us note for ourselves Paul's words about "ignorance of God." They can apply to us too, even if we believe in the bodily resurrection. There are two fairly common distortions of the image of God among believers: either He is imagined as a stern judge who has no condescension or mercy toward sinners, or, on the contrary, as so good-natured that our violations of the commandments do not concern Him at all. It is clear that both caricatures lead to sin: to neglect either of mercy or of truth. Let us hear Paul's call: "Sober up!"
