NOTES for Mat 4:1-11

Why does Satan tempt Jesus at this particular moment? After all, He has already lived on this earth for thirty years. Could it be because Jesus has just taken our sins upon Himself in His baptism in the Jordan? Satan rushes toward Him, attracted by the “scent” of sin. Satan offers the most ordinary temptations: bread, a miracle, and power. Usually that is enough; people, it turns out, are very weak! But Jesus is perhaps the first to pass through these temptations, opening for us too the way to resist the tempter. Let us note that each time Jesus answers not with His own words, but with the words of Scripture (even when the temptation itself is expressed in the words of Scripture). How important it is to know Scripture! Perhaps this is one of the reasons why we began creating this site.
