NOTES for Mar 6:45-53

In the boat amid the stormy sea, the apostles found themselves in the situation that each one of us, and the whole world, constantly faces: a situation in which we seek human means to solve a problem that lies beyond human power. An encounter with God at such moments in life truly fills us with fear, just as it frightened the apostles when they saw Jesus walking on the water. For what are our microscopic problems to Him? What is our life worth before the Almighty? Humanity has sought an answer to this question for centuries and has reached the conclusion that our life is dust, nothing. This is all that we are able to imagine, and on such a pitiful foundation we think that we ourselves may disregard one another’s worth. The Gospel, however, proclaims to us our one and only hope, the first and the last. The Almighty Himself came to us and became like one of us, because He so loved the world. This alone gives meaning to the existence of the human race.

When we ask Him tragic questions about what will happen to us, we, like Job, would have been satisfied simply with answers. But instead of an answer, the Almighty Himself comes to us and says: it is I; do not be afraid.
