NOTES for Joh 2:1-12

The Lord is not obliged to do anything for us. This is precisely the meaning of His words addressed to Mary. But what if we believe in Him so firmly? What if we love Him so much? It makes no difference. His Mother loves and believes no less than we do—in fact, much more. Yet the Lord tells Her that He is already doing for humanity, including the bridegroom and bride, His Mother, and us, the most terrible work of His life: He mentions the “hour” that has not yet come, an expression He later uses for His death on the Cross. Who could bring himself to demand anything of Him after what He has done? But does He not desire our joy and happiness? He came to give us life in abundance (John 10:10), and He often compared His Kingdom to a joyful wedding feast. And are six hundred liters of the finest wine at a poor couple’s wedding not abundance? Yet this is His desire and His gift. Our part here can only be gratitude and, perhaps, quiet hope for His miracle, which we can learn from Her who said: “Do whatever He tells you.”
