NOTES for Pe2 2:1-22

The entire second chapter is devoted to one of the most widespread spiritual illnesses. It is not simply about all sorts of sects or unbelief, although it concerns them too. It is also about selectively believing only what suits us, rather than what God says to us.

The Bible is harsh and blunt, uncompromising and merciless. Such maximalism is of little use in everyday life in the world. Even if one does not personally follow the common rules and standards, simply declaring agreement with such “crude” views can inconvenience and irritate those around us. So it seems better to accept some neutral part, cut away everything unnecessary, and obtain a form of faith that suits us, faith in something remote and uninvolved.

Yet here are the examples of Noah and Lot, who lived by faith and did not depart from it. However difficult it may be to remain faithful, this is the only path for us, because God was faithful to us unto death. Most often, all that is required of us is not to be ashamed to admit that we are with Him, even if such an admission seems very politically incorrect.
