NOTES for Ch1 23:1-32
The command to count the Levites was given after the ill-fated census of the people, yet unlike that census it is not condemned. Apparently the difference is that the Levites were counted in order to assign their service before the Lord, not for David’s personal purposes.
The Ark will now remain in a permanent place; there is no longer any need to carry it from place to place. This means that the Lord has given rest to the people who have taken root in the Promised Land. But for everyone familiar with biblical concepts, the word “rest” is associated with the Sabbath rest, and rightly so. The Sabbath is sanctified and dedicated to the Lord, and now the people are entering a time of rest that must be dedicated to Him. Unfortunately, as we know, the temptation to break this commandment and misuse the time that ought to be devoted to the Lord is too great. Solomon’s peaceful era will be no exception.
But in every situation it is necessary to continue standing before God in prayer. And so, across the centuries, we see David assigning liturgical duties among the Levites. He assigns them in the hope that their service will not cease.
