NOTES for Mat 8:16-17

Evangelist Matthew chooses a wonderful citation from the Old Testament to explain the uncountable miraculous healings accomplished by the Lord Jesus Christ. He remembers the most strange and difficult prophecy of Isaiah about the casting off of the Messiah, the prophecy of the Cross from all the extensive "victorious" traditions of the Old testament narrating the forthcoming kingdom of the Messiah. According to the evangelist, all these healings occurs because Jesus “has taken away our infirmities and has carried out our sickness”.

Man’s mentality is organized in such a way that we fancy the healing God as a good doctor, being different from the fairy tale doctor only by the fact that He {God} can cure any sickness. But this is far from being a true and full representation. Christ heals because he takes away our infirmities and sickness on the Cross. Christ’s Cross on which He shares our sufferings is the instrument of healing. Apostle Paul writes in the 1st epistle to Corinthians “For you have been bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body…” 1 Cor 6:20). It is necessary to remember this price, in order not to be ungrateful.
