NOTES for Gen 3:9-24

How closely what we read today in Genesis resembles our own life. After this, it is hard to doubt that the Bible is not a book about someone else somewhere else, but about you and me. Having disobeyed God’s will, Adam and Eve hide—just as we usually do. When asked directly whether he ate the fruit, Adam does not answer “yes.” He says, “It was the wife You gave me who talked me into it, so I ate.” Of course, I have nothing to do with it: You Yourself gave me such a wife, so it is all Your fault; she is to blame too, while I am actually the injured party... When Eve is asked directly, she answers, “The serpent deceived me; I have nothing to do with it either.” It is always someone else’s fault. We are so reluctant to take responsibility for our actions... We may deceive other people and even ourselves, but the Lord cannot be deceived. He sees our hearts... It is therefore better for us, too, to look at our own hearts objectively, without trying to deceive ourselves or others.
