NOTES for Deu 30:15
Upon attentive reading of the Bible it is easy to be persuaded that all the biblical books are somehow or other imbued by the idea expressed by two ways - the way of good and the way of evil, the way of blessing and the way of curse, the way of life and the way of death. Thus the way of life is always connected to the observance of the Torah and the commandments given by God, and the way of death - with the refusal of its observation and with the violation of commandments.
Sometimes such rigidity raises question: but is this Torah justified? Indeed, in the world there are other colors besides the black and the white. Everything is so clear? Perhaps there is a certain third way, of which the fallen human nature is inclined to look for? Usually we looked and look for the answer to this question in the sphere of morality, reducing it to various value systems. But is it in morality the problem?
And why God needs our morality? He needs not our morality, but our heart. And the observance of commandments, the keeping of the Torah are not a means to become a moral person (it is just the corollary), but are a means to obtain this spiritual form, which will make for us possible to communion with God.
Even the Decalogue is not a moral code, although externally it is very similar to it, but rather a description of this algorithm of communion with God, who is appropriate for a normal and healthy spiritual life (how the spiritual life of a fallen man can be in general normal and healthy).
But then the ways can really be only two: either going to God, or away from Him. The directions of the movement (physical, as spiritual), certainly, exist much more, but the ways are only two. And God calls us to determine in the main, without being distracted by the secondary. Indeed it is really about the spiritual life and the spiritual death here.
