NOTES for Isa 4:2-6

Once again we read about “that day,” but what a different picture we see! What is revealed to the prophet has many layers, apparently relating to different times. And while we can say that all the prophecies (or perhaps almost all of them) in the preceding chapters have been fulfilled, this prophecy has been fulfilled only in part. For the branch of the Lord has appeared in beauty and glory, and purification by a spirit of judgment and a spirit of burning has taken place; but the abiding presence of God’s glory, visible to everyone in the fullness of His power, has been promised to us only at the Second Coming.
