NOTES for Isa 33:1-24

Almost all the territory of Judah is occupied by the Assyrians; only Jerusalem still holds out, yet Isaiah predicts the imminent fall of Assyria and Israel’s triumph. As always, his prophecies are precious to us because he foresees the victorious Messiah, the King of Judah. “Your eyes will see the King in His beauty; they will behold a distant land,” says Isaiah. Who is this King? “The Lord is our judge, the Lord is our lawgiver, the Lord is our king; He will save us.” In these final words Isaiah almost names the Messiah, for “Jesus” means “God saves.”
