NOTES for Lev 27:1-34

In fulfillment of a vow, one may give one’s house, land, or livestock for the needs of the sanctuary. But the most important vow is the dedication of oneself, when a person symbolically gives himself into the Lord’s possession, paying a monetary ransom for himself instead of entering actual slavery. Such a vow reflects the ultimate end of every religious aspiration: true service to God, in which He directs the person in everything and leads him toward a goal known to Him alone. We have a real possibility of such service—let us remember that the apostles called themselves servants of God and Christ. This service is no abstraction, for we truly can be guided by His Word, His Spirit, and His commandment of love.
