NOTES for Num 12:1-15

A new rebellion, this time from those closest to him. Moses does not cling to power, but the exodus from Egypt is his calling, his mission, and his responsibility. It is no accident that the Lord so firmly protects Moses' authority, for these events, and Aaron and Miriam's very arguments—“We know the Lord no less well than he does”—strongly resemble the Gospel events in which even those close to the Lord Jesus, and then many others centuries later, refused to accept Him, leaving Him “without honor in His own country.” The Lord truly speaks to every person, through the voice of conscience, intuition, inner feelings, and outward circumstances. But is this a reason to say, “We know God ourselves, no less well than He does”? By doing so we risk failing to hear what matters most and failing to meet the One who will truly reveal God to us.
