NOTES for Num 29:40
The statute concerning vows before the Lord and responsibility for fulfilling them reveals an important aspect of life in a family or any community in which someone bears greater responsibility than the others. For God, proper relationships within the family prove more important than the fulfillment of the vow itself. A husband or the father of a minor daughter may therefore annul her vow to God. Here, as always, God calls us to pay more attention to His word than to the formal fulfillment of our “duty” before Him.
