NOTES for Joh 6:60-69

Almost every one of us knows so well the state of the disciples listening to Jesus. Unfortunately, there have been moments, and still are, when something within us, even if not openly, protests against the Lord's truth. Murmuring rises up, and the thought that He wants what is best for us slips away. His request that we trust Him and surrender our life begins to seem impossible. What comes next, and how can we fight this? We face the choice that once confronted, perhaps more than once, every person listening to Christ. Some went forward without paying attention to doubts and confusion; some, like many of His disciples, “withdrew and no longer walked with Him” (John 6:66), unable to accept His word; and some struggled. They did not allow troubling thoughts to drown out the earlier words of Jesus that had called them to follow Him; they took a step into the unknown and continued on, giving their lives to the Lord. In the same way, at such moments the Lord invites us to show trust by repeating to ourselves the apostles' words: “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life; and we have believed and known that You are the Christ, the Son of the living God” (John 6:68-69).
