NOTES for LukĀ 4:43

The desire to keep Jesus with oneself is very understandable in human terms. At least when one has already accepted Him inwardly and is ready to establish with Him the relationships that can really change one's whole life. But then He leaves. He says that He must bring the good news to others too, that He cannot remain. What, then, are we to do? We have only just met Him, barely had time to know Him, and so many questions and perplexities remain, so much still needs to be discussed. But it is impossible to hold Him.

And on the other hand, one can always be with Him. Truly, He can be known only in His Kingdom, together with His Kingdom. And in the Kingdom one can always meet Him. There are no distances there. And the wider it spreads, the easier it will be to meet Him. So it turns out that it will be better for us if He leaves. For He leaves in order to remain with us, to be closer to us, or rather, so that we may be closer to Him.

We are truly close to Him in the breaking of bread, in the Eucharist. And for this, He must be not where we can see Him physically, at the border that separates the Kingdom and the world not yet transformed, but in the depth of the Kingdom, on the throne. Then, from there, we will be able to see Him everywhere, if, of course, we ourselves become inhabitants of the Kingdom. But if we do not, then communion with Him will give us nothing, even if it continues for all eternity.
