NOTES for Joh 6:37-40
This text is harsh, to say the least. On the one hand, the Lord says that He will reject no one who comes to Him, and that the Father's will is that nothing should be lost but should be raised up. On the other hand, everyone who sees the Son and believes in Him has eternal life. Let us assume that our faith is in good order, but few among all who have lived or are living can say that the Lord appeared to them personally in the flesh.
Now let us look at what surrounds these three verses, and we find ourselves right in the middle of the discourse on the Bread of Life, on the Flesh of Christ that will become for us the source of eternal life. Our task is to feed on this bread and contemplate God, who humbled Himself to such a helpless state in order to unite Himself with everyone ready to receive Him. If we do this, believing Him, He will also raise us up on the last day, as He promised.
