NOTES for Ис 40:1-11
“All flesh is grass,” the prophet Isaiah tells us today. These words seem frightening, but in fact they are consoling. What are the works of the flesh? Much is said about this in the Bible. In biblical language, flesh as opposed to spirit is the human person without God. And this is the key idea: without God. This—whatever is outside Him—is grass that will disappear. But His Word endures for ever, and His word is blessing, it is light... it is simply He Himself. Therefore, thank God that what is done outside Him is not eternal, but passes and disappears. Only what is true and righteous, what comes from Him, will remain.
