NOTES for DanĀ 5:24-25
The incident with Belshazzar would make anyone's knees shake. You live calmly, do what you have been taught and what you consider right, drift with the current, and do not think much about what has happened. In general, you do not reflect because you have no use for it. And suddenly a moment comes when a human hand, and nothing more, appears before you and writes words you do not understand. And when someone is found to explain them, it does not get easier. It turns out that in effect you have seen the end of the time allotted to you. "God has numbered your kingdom and brought it to an end": everything you considered built for ages is finished. Everything will be destroyed and divided. But above all, "you have been weighed in the balances and found very light." A person cannot know when the control weighing will take place. And if it coincides with the end of his lifetime, as happened with Belshazzar, there will be no chance left to toss something solid onto the scales. One can, of course, live one's whole life like a seller who cheats with the scales and is never caught by the hand. But God cannot be deceived; He has His own weights.
