NOTES for Mat 8:8

How often we wait for God to answer our prayers with a bright miracle that turns our life upside down. We expect from a miracle inner renewal for ourselves, confirmation of our faith; sometimes we hope that the action of divine grace will make the proper impression on people whom we consider unbelievers. In essence, this is not so bad; it is a kind of initial stage that already speaks of trust in us.

But we see how the centurion consciously refuses the chance to see how his servant's healing will happen; he does not doubt that it will happen. The most important thing for him is the servant's own life, the life of a person for whom he is responsible. And the Lord expects more from us: the trust and humility of the centurion, who does not seek a strong impression from the miracle. He wants to see in us faith whose center is love for a person, for everyone who in one way or another depends on us.
