NOTES for Joh 14:26

When pronouncing the word "Comforter," each person imagines something of his own, but there are also common traits that can be singled out. A comforter should deliver from sadness and melancholy, wipe away tears, stroke one's head, and say something pleasant. Is this how the Lord understands the word when He speaks of the Comforter? We find nothing of the sort: the Comforter will teach everything and remind of everything. Comfort appears before us as the knowledge, acceptance, and assimilation of Christ's words. Only in this does the Lord see for us the possibility of being comforted, of gaining happiness and freedom.
