NOTES for Jer 3:1-25
In life, we are most often guided by human laws. Thus Scripture presents the relationship between God and people as analogous to the relationship between husband and wife (compare Eph 5:22-33). Under the Old Testament law, a wife divorced from her husband cannot return to him, and a woman who has been unfaithful to her husband must be punished by death. But in this prophecy God Himself says something incredible: unfaithful Israel may return to God and receive forgiveness. Let us therefore remember that His love is stronger than the law, and imitate Him in this.
