NOTES for Luk 1:57-80
Zechariah’s song is full of Old Testament images proclaiming deliverance from enemies and the Lord’s mercy toward His people. John’s birth begins a new era in the relationship between God and human beings. But it is also important that Zechariah himself served the advent of this era: by his openness to God and obedience to His word, he carried out God’s plan for the birth of the prophet who would prepare the way of the coming Lord. We need to remember that, by responding to God’s call expressed in His word, we too can serve the fulfillment of the prophecies about the Kingdom of God that is coming in its fullness.
